BitChat: Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has launched a brand new messaging app 'Bitchat' which is specially designed to work without internet. Dorsey has introduced it as his "weekend project" but its technology and idea are quite unique.

The most special thing about Bitchat is that it does not require any personal information from the user, neither mobile number nor email ID, that is, the conversation remains completely anonymous. This app is specially made for those places where the internet connection is weak or not at all. With the help of this app, users can send and receive messages from people nearby offline, only through Bluetooth.

How does Bitchat work?

Bitchat is based on peer-to-peer messaging technology. The user does not need internet, Wi-Fi or mobile data. The app connects to nearby devices via Bluetooth and forms a network.

If the user sending the message and the user receiving it are far away from each other, then the message “hops” from one to another through nearby devices and reaches its real receiver. This is called mesh networking. There is neither a central server nor any kind of user ID in this entire process.

Does this affect privacy?

No, end-to-end encryption has been used in the app so that only the sender and the receiver can read the message. No third person in between, even the app itself, can access these messages. Apart from this, the messages get deleted automatically after some time, which makes privacy even stronger.

Special features of Bitchat

Internet free messaging: Neither Wi-Fi nor mobile data, it works only with Bluetooth.

Bluetooth mesh networking: Devices can connect to each other up to a distance of about 30 meters.

Anonymous chatting: No need to create an account, no phone number or email is asked.

Encryption and data deletion: Messages are completely secure and automatically get deleted over time.

Is Bitchat available for everyone?

Currently, this app is in beta testing stage and is available only for some iOS users through Apple TestFlight. With the launch, the limit of 10,000 users was also filled immediately.

Jack Dorsey has publicly shared the whitepaper and beta invite of this app on X (formerly Twitter). However, the date of its official launch has not been revealed yet. Meanwhile, its Android version is also being prepared. This initiative of Dorsey is considered to be the beginning of a new chatting revolution of the future where neither internet nor identity will be required.
