Election Commissioners are yet to decide the dates for SIR exercise in West Bengal or other states, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said in a media briefing on Sunday.

"...The three Election Commissioners will decide when the exercise of SIR will be carried out in West Bengal or other states," CEC said.

When asked about fake migrant voters, Kumar clarified that only Indian citizens can vote for the election of MP and MLA.

"...I want to make it clear that according to the Constitution of India, only Indian citizens can vote for the election of MP and MLA. People from other countries do not have the right. If such people have filled out the enumeration form, then during the SIR process, they will have to prove their nationality by submitting some documents. Their names will be removed after the investigation," he said.

For the first time, Booth Level Officers’ (BLO) training is being conducted across five divisions in West Bengal by West Bengal-Chief Electoral Office (WB-CEO), from July 24-28, raising speculations about Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bengal, after Bihar, ET reported on July 25.

On August 15, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee opposed the SIR practice in the state saying, "Those who shout about CAA, there is an attempt by them to implement NRC in the name of SIR."

Addressing Bihar SIR issues, EC urged all recognised political parties to flag discrepancies in voter list before September 1. It stated that no allegations will be addressed after the said date and all claims will be termed 'baseless'.
