Can Cold Water Baths Cause Heart Attacks? Winter has begun, and the water in rooftop water tanks cools down by morning. People often prefer to take a bath early in the morning before going to the office. Those who don't have a geyser to heat water often resort to cold water. If you do this frequently, you need to be cautious. Bathing in cold water from a water tank early in the morning can be fatal. Yes, you might be surprised to hear this, but it's absolutely true. Cardiologists advise against bathing in cold water from a water tank in the morning, as it can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
Dr. Vanita Arora, senior cardiologist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, explained that when cold water suddenly falls on the body, it triggers a cold shock response. This causes rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and a spike in blood pressure. While this may not be dangerous for the average person, it can be fatal for heart patients. Bathing in extremely cold water can lead to a heart attack and stroke. When the body is suddenly exposed to cold water, the blood vessels constrict, forcing the heart to work harder to pump blood.
According to cardiologists, if a person has pre-existing heart disease, angina, or heart blockage, sudden exposure to cold water can increase the risk of cardiac arrest or brain stroke. Therefore, bathing in extremely cold water early in the morning should be avoided. Especially the elderly and heart patients should exercise this caution during winter. People with high blood pressure, thyroid, or asthma should also avoid bathing in cold water. Pregnant women and those with weakened immunity should also avoid this practice. Such people should bathe in lukewarm water so that the body experiences the temperature gradually.
Experts advise that people should avoid bathing in cold tank water. If the water is fresh from a hand pump or summer, bathing with it is not dangerous. Bathing with fresh water increases the body's energy and alertness. It improves blood circulation and lowers stress hormone levels. According to doctors, bathing with cold water isn't harmful for everyone, but everyone should exercise caution. If you have heart disease, blood pressure problems, or dizziness, it's best to consult a doctor before taking a cold water bath.
