Bilva Patra (Bael Patra) has a very sacred place in Hinduism. It is considered to be the favorite leaf of Lord Shiva. There is a religious belief that the three gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh reside in the Bilva Patra. Its three leaves are considered to be the symbol of Trimurti. Brahma for creation, Vishnu for protection, and Shiva for destruction. That is why when devotees offer Bilva Patra on Shivling, they worship the Tridev together.

In spirituality, the three leaves of Bilva Patra are also a symbol of Satva, Raja, and Tama. These three qualities are the basis of the entire creation. According to the scriptures, one of the specialties of Bilva Patra is that it has the power to destroy the sins of three births. It has been mentioned in the Shiva Purana.
Just seeing, touching or offering Bilva Patra to Lord Shiva destroys even the gravest of sins. This mantra clarifies that Bilva Patra is not just a leaf, but is the carrier of spiritual power. According to religious beliefs, the person who worships the Shivling situated under the Bel tree not only earns virtue but also moves towards salvation. Apart from this, the devotees who sit under the Bel tree and pour water on their heads get the same virtue as bathing in all the holy rivers.
Another feature of the Bilva leaf is its coolness. It provides peace and coolness to the hot body of Lord Shiva, which balances his fierceness. This is the reason why the offering of Bilva leaves is especially important in the month of Shravan.
Alternatives to Bilva leaves and special rules
If, for some reason, the Bilva leaves obtained from plants are not available, then Bilva leaves made of gold, silver or copper can also be offered to Lord Shiva. According to the scriptures, the result of worshipping with these metal Bilva leaves is also the same as that of the leaves produced from plants. If a resolution has been taken to offer a particular number of Bilva leaves, then it is necessary to follow that resolution completely. The same number or more of Bilva leaves should be offered every day, but after offering more number of leaves, one should not reduce the number the next day.

Unique fruit of virtue
It is mentioned in the Puranas that if a devotee offers one Aak (Madar) flower, one Kaner flower and one Bilva leaf together on Shivling, then he gets the same amount of virtue as donating ten gold coins. Apart from this, many types of sins are destroyed by just seeing and touching the Bel tree. This tree is considered to be imbued with Shiva Tattva itself.
