There's nothing worse than slicing open an avocado only to find it brown and mushy inside. What makes it even more frustrating is the price you paid, only for it to go mouldy within a few days. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the price of an avocado in January 2025 reached 91 pence, almost £1 each, marking a massive 93% increase since the year 2000, when they cost just 47 pence.
One expert, however, has shared a helpful and easy tip using one ingredient that is most likely already in your kitchen cupboard. According to chef, Amy Lynn Cross, Founder of The Cross Legacy, white vinegar can help make your avocados last longer, up to 30 days after you first bought them from the supermarket.
She wrote: "Have you seen the TikTok videos, IG reels and other social media influencers that have been sharing the food hack of storing avocadoes in water?
"These tips show people storing whole and halved avocados in water to keep them fresh longer. It has been all over social media. In reality, it could be making you sick. The FDA has come out and spoken against this method of storing avocados."
Instead, the expert said that before putting your avocados away with lemons in the crisper drawer of your fridge, put them in a bowl with cold water and a quarter cup of vinegar.
Then, let them soak for two minutes before rinsing and letting them air dry.
Make sure you don't store bananas and apples with avocadoes as this will only make them get riper quicker.
Cross has managed to keep her avocadoes fresh for an entire month using such methods.
The reason this works so well is because white vinegar has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties. It helps kill surface bacteria and mould spores that can cause early spoilage.
Additionally, the acidity in the vinegar creates an environment that slows down the ripening process, helping keep your avocadoes firm and green for longer.
