A livid Jack Grealish allowed his temper to boil over following the Merseyside derby, earning himself a yellow card after confronting match officials alongside Everton boss David Moyes. Liverpool extended their flawless Premier League record to five victories from five matches this season with a 2-1 triumph thanks to strikes from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike.
However, tensions erupted after the final whistle, with Grealish earning a booking from referee Darren England for his heated exchange. Grealish's England colleague Jordan Pickford stepped in to prevent his team-mate from landing in deeper trouble whilst Moyes also voiced his displeasure to the match officials.
The reigning champions established a commanding 2-0 advantage at half-time and appeared in control before Idrissa Gueye reduced the deficit on the hour mark. This sparked a dramatic conclusion, though the Toffees couldn't locate the elusive equaliser as Arne Slot's side preserved their perfect beginning to the fresh campaign.
Grealish fumed after the match and explained to TNT Sports that he was frustrated partly because of the manner of his side's defeat.
"It was what I expected, coming here it was hostile, faster," he said. "I don't think we played well in the first-half, we came in a half-time and had a chat with the manager and then second half, we lost the game in the second half.
"Frustrating because if we had played like that, pressed like that from the start it would have been a different game. In the end we couldn't get that last goal.
"When I have watched them [Liverpool] this season they have been so good but there has been a few times they have gone 2-0 up and then conceded two, we had the belief. We got the one back, a great finish Idrissa [Gueye] but we couldn't get that last goal."
Match of the Day analyst and former Everton striker Wayne Rooney was impressed with the Toffees' display and believed they were the superior side overall. He said: "Everton started off poorly. Liverpool obviously took advantage of that with the opening two goals.
"After that I think Everton were probably the better team. They just lacked cutting edge, intensity and some aggression. The second-half changes were positive but should have been made earlier."
Moyes also joined the conversation, appearing to be disappointed that just three minutes of stoppage time were added on to the end of the 90 as Everton pushed for an equaliser.
Speaking on TNT, commentator Ally McCoist pointed out: "He's very unhappy David. I'm not sure what he's unhappy about, but I think when he goes back and has a cup of tea he'll be proud of his boys. I thought that there'd be slightly more stoppage time. I really did."
