Trump and Putin make 'progress' but fail to secure Ukraine peace deal

After just three hours of tense negotiations between US President Donald Trump andRussian President Vladimir Putin, clear progress has officially been made in bringing the Russia-Ukraine war to a swift resolution.

The highly lauded meeting between Americans Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff and Marco Rubio, and Russians Vladimir Putin, Sergei Lavrov and Yuri Ushakov, hinged on trying to successfully negotiate a ceasefire to end the war with Ukraine that has raged since February 2022.

Up until now, Russia had been reluctant to make any compromises amid its ongoing occupation and assault on its neighbour, however, after the meeting with Trump, this no longer appears to be the case, with Russia having agreed on several key points, but not enough to secure a ceasefire.

Yet while it may not be the outcome many had hoped for, it is a clear sign of progress and one step closer to ending the conflict which has claimed the lives of more than 1 million individuals so far.

Addressing reporters at a press conference, Trump did however remain positive about just how much headway had been made, and appeared to be in good spirits with Putin, when his Russian counterpart suggested the next meeting between both nations should take place in Moscow.

While no details were given about which points had been agreed upon, Trump did hint at his next steps in securing a deal, as he explained he would be reaching out to NATO and Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky, to discuss the next steps.
