Legendary film director Guillermo del Toro has finally released his gothic horror adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and it's already getting rave reviews. The movie stars Oscar Isaac in the titular role alongside Jacob Elordi, who plays the creature.
Other stars include Horror darling Mia Goth, who portrays love interest Elizabeth, as well as Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Charles Dance and David Bradley. The logline for the film reads: "A brilliant but egotistical scientist brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation."
Frankenstein arrived in cinemas last week, but soon Netflix viewers will also get the chance to watch the 'masterpiece' sci-fi epic from the comfort of their own living rooms.
Guillermo del Toro's 2025 adaptation of Frankenstein is based on Mary Shelley's 1818 gothic novel of the same name.
A classic of the gothic genre, Frankenstein is widely considered to be the first ever science fiction novel.
It tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a genius but self-centred inventor who creates a new lifeform out of different body parts from various corpses.
It explores several themes including the dangers of playing God, the consequences of prejudice and the price we pay for vengeance.
The Rotten Tomatoes synopsis for the latest film adaptation reads: "Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley's classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation."
Frankenstein is currently playing in cinemas, but will be coming to Netflix on November 7.
The Trailer is already available to watch on Netflix, as well as a series of behind-the-scenes videos.
Frankenstein already has an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the Critics Consensus summary reading: "Finding the humanity in one of cinema's most iconic monsters, Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein is a lavish epic that gets its most invigorating volts from Jacob Elordi's standout performance."
The Boston Globe wrote: "This is a horror movie, but it's also a heartbreaking tale of forced existence and the subsequent quest for answers. And it's one of the year's best movies.
"Guillermo del Toro delivers a moving masterpiece of horror and romance," Mashable critiqued, while Awards Radar added: "Frankenstein is a technically stunning and highly watchable take on the classic monster from Guillermo del Toro."
"Visually, the film is a sumptuous feast," the Washington Post opined, as Empire praised: "Frankenstein is brought to life in glorious, Gothic fashion by Guillermo del Toro's painstaking artistry and Mike Hill's elegant creature design. A big film with a huge beating heart."
The Hollywood Reporter said: "One of del Toro's finest, this is epic-scale storytelling of uncommon beauty, feeling and artistry."
