You will not believe how much it cost to recreate Meghan Markle's homemade crisps from her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. The second series dropped on Netflix this week, but sources suggested it may not be commissioned again after viewership figures fell below expectations.
On the show, where she invites friends and famous guests to her Californian estate to share cooking and hosting tips, she has stunned audiences with plenty of unique recipes, like her 'sun tea', or her love for edible flowers. Viral moments stirred audiences in the first season, like when she corrected Mindy Kaling that her last name is Sussex rather than her title. She also launched As Ever, which sells goods such as jams, based on her farmhouse-style cooking. But in this series, Ms Markle has tried out a new concoction: homemade crisps.
The classic British crisps were served to three-Michelin-star UK chef Clare Smyth, who arrived in Montecito from London. Despite only having four ingredients, the haul quickly added up for food writer, Silvana Franco, who recreated the snack.
Meghan Markle fried russet potatoes in not just any regular sunflower oil, but peanut oil, sold as groundnut oil in the UK. This came with a price tag of £5.60 for the one litre required.
Then came the priciest ingredient, vinegar. Instead of using liquid vinegar, which would make the crisps go soggy, Meghan uses a white vinegar powder.
Finding this is no easy feat in the UK, and Ms Franco had to settle for apple cider vinegar powder in a 227g pouch, which set her back £16.80.
These three ingredients and salt came to a staggering £22, compared to a share bag of crisps in the supermarket, which usually varies between £1.50 to £3.
Ms Franco happily accepted that the crisps looked "beautiful," tasted "fantastic," and crisped up well with a slow frying process.
Writing for The Telegraph she said: "If you are not going to make these very often I'm not sure it would be worth the effort of buying all the ingredients, especially when you can get a packet of these as easy as anything."
She declared them "easy, but a right royal faff."
