Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s war on tobacco just got personal — his latest target isn’t Big Tobacco but Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
On the sidelines of a peace summit in Egypt aimed at ending the war in Gaza, Erdogan pledged to find a way to persuade Meloni to quit smoking.
"You look great. But I have to make you stop smoking," Erdogan told Meloni, according to footage that is being circulated on social media.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who was present alongside them, quickly dismissed Erdogan’s efforts. "It’s impossible!" he exclaimed while laughing. "I know, I know," Meloni responded, adding that quitting smoking might render her less sociable. "I don’t want to kill somebody."
It seems that Erdogan is campaigning his no Tabaco policy even in the peace summit. Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey's commitment to a smoke-free future.
